South Dakota Welcomes Oktoberfest Celebrations

South Dakota Oktoberfest season runs September 19 to October 3, with major events in Deadwood, Hill City, and Aberdeen. Oktoberfest events in South Dakota mix traditional Bavarian festivities with a rugged "Wild West" twist

The hallmark celebrations take classic German festivities and mix them with frontier town flair, offering free brats, polka bands, quirky local contests, and scenic autumn backdrops. The fall season and the diverse Oktoberfest celebrations create a unique experience that locals and the German community from around the state come to enjoy.

What are the Main Oktoberfest Celebrations in South Dakota?

Top Oktoberfest celebrations in South Dakota include the scenic 1880 Train ride in the Black Hills, wild west festivities in Deadwood, and community block parties in Vermillion

Deadwood Oktoberfest

  • Location: Main Street, Historic Deadwood, SD 57732

  • Dates: October 2 and October 3

  • Timing: Friday from 10:00 AM · Saturday from 11:00 AM

  • Admission: Free

Deadwood Oktoberfest is a free two-day festival on one of America's most famous streets, where heated Bavarian beer tents sit between gold rush casinos and saloons named after people who were shot in the 1870s. The Bob Grimm Band plays authentic polka in the basement of the Historic Iron Horse Inn on Friday evening, and seven downtown casino restaurants compete for the crowd's vote in the Brat Cookoff on Saturday afternoon.

The Lost Lederhosen Hunt runs a city-wide QR code scavenger hunt through the Plan Deadwood app on Friday, with prize winners announced by 8:30 PM. Calamity's Climb at Outlaw Square is the main paid attraction, running both days for kids and adults.

1880 Train Oktoberfest Express

  • Location: Hill City Depot, 222 Railroad Ave, Hill City, SD 57745

  • Date: September 26

  • Train departs: 2:30 PM

  • Tickets: $73 per adult (Pre-booking required)

  • Age: 21 and older only

  • Cancellations: No refunds unless the train does not operate

1880 Train Oktoberfest Express is a popular adults-only (21+) special train ride event, operated by the Black Hills Central Railroad. The seasonal journey features a vintage steam engine ride through the Black Hills of South Dakota, followed by a festive German celebration with food, seasonal beer, and live polka music. There is genuinely no Oktoberfest experience like it anywhere in the country.

Every ticket covers a full German meal, seasonal beer pours, and a commemorative event keepsake, with the celebration starting nearly three hours before the train departs. Guests spend that pre-departure window at the Hill City Depot with yard games, German beer, and welcome snacks, then board for a 20-mile round trip to Keystone and back through the Black Hills with live polka music filling the cars.

Vermillion Oktoberfest

  • Location: Ratingen Platz, Downtown Vermillion, SD 57069

  • Date: Last Friday of September

  • Timing: 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm

  • Admission: Free

  • Tractor Pull Entry: $40 for a four-person team · $20 for a two-person team

Vermillion Oktoberfest celebrates traditional German heritage with an annual celebration at Ratingen Platz in Downtown Vermillion. The festival features Wiener Schnitzel from the Eagles Club, local brews from XIX Brewing, competitions, and the signature Bohemian Tractor Pull down Main Street.

Wear your best dirndl or lederhosen for the costume contest and test your arm strength in the stein-holding competition. The Bohemian Tractor Pull is the standout event where a team of four uses a rope to drag a vintage tractor 100 feet down Main Street, with the fastest team taking half the pot in cash plus an official Oktoberfest stein. The Mark Vyhlidal Combo plays polka, and the Alphorn Klangen quartet performs traditional alpine horn music.

Mitchell Oktoberfest

  • Location: South Main Street, Mitchell, SD 57301

  • Date: September 19

  • Timing: 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM

  • Admission: Free

Mitchell Oktoberfest is a family-friendly community festival that transforms the downtown corridor into a lively celebration of German heritage. The event packs more competition into a free five-hour street festival than most South Dakota events manage over a full weekend.

The contest lineup includes stein-holding, keg races, musical chairs for kids and adults, pumpkin-throwing, a best-dressed competition, and strongman contests, with Oktoberfest-themed prizes for winners across all categories. The Wiener Dog Races begin at 2:30 PM and run as a fundraiser for the local pet shelter, with a $10 registration fee and a strict Dachshunds-only rule. The Kid Pedal Pull for ages 4 to 12 has its own separate registration starting at 1:00 PM.

Is there a Dress Code for South Dakota Oktoberfest Events?

There is no official dress code for any of South Dakota's Oktoberfest, but wearing traditional Bavarian attire is highly appreciated and even prized at some events. Women’s dirndl and men’s Lederhosen earn automatic entry into costume contests at both Vermillion and Mitchell. You can also attend South Dakota celebrations in everyday clothes like jeans, t-shirts or dress shirts. Wearing comfortable, flat-soled shoes is important, as you need to walk a lot to cover the distance between venues.

What to Know Before Going to South Dakota Oktoberfest?

  • Ride the Oktoberfest Express from Hill City for beer, food, and scenery.

  • Check 1880 Train tickets and departure times before planning your festival day.

  • Explore Black Hills maps, lodging packages, coupons, hiking routes, and scenic drives.

  • Bring cash for smaller vendors, games, tents, and quick festival purchases.

  • Pace your beer with water because dry mountain air causes faster dehydration.
