What is Oide Wiesn at Oktoberfest?

Oide Wiesn is a special and separate part of the Oktoberfest celebration in Munich, Germany. It focuses on classic fun, a traditional Bavarian vibe, and cultural activities. This area is opposite the main Oktoberfest, which is famous for its loud beer tents and adventurous modern rides. Here, you can experience a calm atmosphere while living authentic traditions that made this festival famous in the first place. If you love history, gentle rides and a family-friendly festive environment, then Oide Wiesn is a must visit place.

When Was Oide Wiesn Created?

The Oide Wiesn was started in 2010 to mark the 200th anniversary of the festival. The authorities made a new part of the festival by introducing the concept of authentic Oktoberfest. They called it Historische Wiesn, which was full of old rides, cozy tents, and traditional music. People loved the idea so much that the management decided to make it a permanent part of the Oktoberfest.

Organizational Changes in Oide Wiesn for Oktoberfest 2026

Oide Wiesn saw an attendance decline during 2025 (Almost 16% lower attendance compared to 2024), and the management has planned a few changes to make up for this difference and encourage more attendees to visit this old Oktoberfest.

Oide Wiesn will now be accessible from the main festival grounds as well, which was previously reserved for reentry only. To address crowded entrances, wristbands will be replaced with QR codes and re-entry stamps. The management has also allowed flexibility in ticket pricing, with 12 entry tickets available for the price of 10.

Exploring the Oide Wiesn Tents for a Classic Vibe

The three beer tents are the specialty of Oide Wiesn, just like the rest of the festival. But the vibe of these tents is different. They offer a more traditional setting with a friendly atmosphere, authentic Bavarian food, and classical music. Their sizes are also smaller than the giant halls of the main Oktoberfest. There are three main tents, each with its own special qualities.

Festzelt Tradition

The Festzelt Tradition is a very welcoming tent. It is run by the friendly Winklhofer and Wieser families and has a cozy Bavarian feel with wooden furniture and decorations. You can enjoy lively folk music from real brass bands instead of loud pop music.

It is the only tent at all of Oktoberfest that serves Augustiner beer from traditional wooden barrels called Hirschen. This method makes the beer taste very smooth. For food, you will find classic Bavarian dishes like juicy roast pork, crispy half chicken, and grilled fish on a stick. They also have tasty apple strudel and options for kids. It is a great place to enjoy good food, watch amazing folk dances like the Schuhplattler, and even see exciting whip-cracking shows.

Museumszelt

The Museumszelt, or a museum tent, is a place to take a fascinating look into the past. Here, you will see old photos, traditional costumes and tools that show how Oktoberfest has changed over the past two centuries. It helps you understand the Oktoberfest history. Very old fair rides that still work are sometimes shown here to tell you how people had fun long ago.

The gentle traditional brass band music plays quietly, which makes your visit feel even more historical. It is an excellent way to learn about the roots of the festival and the people who made it famous.

Volkssängerzelt Schützenlisl

The Volkssängerzelt Schützenlisl is the place for fun sing alongs. This tent brings back the joyful old tradition of Munich music halls. Here, talented folk singers perform traditional songs and encourage everyone to sing along.

You might hear a Gstanzl, which is a unique Bavarian rhyming song that is often very funny and sometimes playfully teases people. It is a very cozy spot where you can relax, listen to authentic Bavarian sounds, and feel like you are part of a musical family.

Oide Wiesn Rides and Attractions

One of the biggest attractions at the Oide Wiesn is its amazing collection of historic rides. These are not adventurous and super fast rides like the roller coasters of the main Oktoberfest. Oide Wiesn rides are vintage and offer a gentler and more enjoyable experience. The rides here cost a small fee per ride, around €1.50. You buy tokens or pay directly for each ride. There are also other Oide Wiesn attractions and activities!

  • Historic Carousels

These are beautiful merry-go-rounds. They have painted horses and fancy designs. Many have been spinning for over 100 years. Some use steam power while others are turned by hand.

  • Swing Boats

Swing Boats look like big boats. They swing high back and forth, where you feel like you are soaring through the air. They are simple and fun to ride.

  • Whip Cracking

You might witness impressive demonstrations of Goaßlschnalzer, skilled performers who crack long whips to create loud and rhythmic sounds.

  • Chain Swings

The seat swings out as the carousel spins around where you sit on a small seat. It gives you a fun, airy feeling without being too fast. Some of these chain swings are very old.

  • Old Shooting Galleries

You can test how well you aim at these galleries. You try to hit targets that may lead you to win prizes.

  • Parades and Historical Displays

There are small parades featuring historic vehicles or people in old costumes. You might also see displays of old tractors or other historical machinery.

  • Museumszelt Activities

The Museum Tent offers a range of special activities for children like face painting or educational games, allowing them to learn about Oktoberfest history in a fun way.

  • Schichtl

Schichtl is not a ride but a famous variety show theatre. It has been entertaining crowds since 1867. It is known for its unusual acts. One famous act is a decapitation illusion that is really worth watching.

  • Krinoline

The Krinoline is a charming carousel built in 1924. It is special because it has its own live brass band. The band plays music as the carousel spins. This makes the ride a unique and delightful experience.

  • Teufelsrad (Devil's Wheel)

This is a local favorite ride since 1908. People try to stay on a giant spinning disc. Two helpers try to knock them off with a rope or by spinning the disc faster. It is very funny to watch.

  • Toboggan

The Toboggan is a tall slide where you must climb up a tricky moving walkway to reach the top. Many people slip and slide back down. This is highly entertaining for onlookers.

What is Special About Oide Wiesn Beer?

The beer experience at Oide Wiesn is unique. The Festzelt Tradition is the only tent at the entire Oktoberfest that serves Augustiner Beer directly from traditional wooden barrels. This old-fashioned method gives the beer an extra smooth and fresh taste. It connects you directly to centuries of Bavarian brewing history. If you do not prefer to drink beer, then there is a good selection of lemonades and other non-alcoholic drinks.
